Trash-picked Treasures

John picked this up at the entrance to our neighborhood over a year ago. The upholstery is in great condition though the wood is a little beat. But isn’t it awesome!?! I love the wooden back of the chair. AND….it’s the perfect color for my living room! I just love it when he finds something like this!!

The “Anti” dolls

AKA the “crazy auntie” dolls. These were a gift to my great-niece Polly for Christmas. They were meant to be a gag jabbing at my crazy SILs. My SILs almost peed themselves laughing and Polly, surprisingly, was captivated by them.

Pre-holiday Panic

The panic is setting in. So much to do…..not enough time. My week was thrown out of balance by the arrival of the stomach flu on Sun. night. Both DNA and Mojo were down. Then it hit me…..followed by John. Fortunately, we all recovered within a day but it was a day of lost holiday prep. Now, I’m playing catch up. John’s brother is in town which means there are family festivities each day. We’re hosting family on Fri night and I haven’t even begun to plan the menu or clean the house. And still….there is more shopping to do. I just want to slow down……and knit by the fire a while…..listening to Christmas music…..with the kids playing nearby. I want to nibble cookies and drink tea and not feel like I have this HUGE list looming over me. I guess this means I need to be majorly productive this morning… off I go!

My favorite things

Each year for Christmas, my sisters-in-law and I have a very special gift exchange. We give our favorite things. The rules for the exchange are as follows:

*it must be something YOU love
*you must give the same item to all
*it has to cost less than $20

This has turned out to be a highlight of the holiday for each of us —- finding out what quirky things we have all discovered through the year (or have always used but decided to finally share the secret). And it’s really cool to share my favorite things with my favorite people.

As always, it’s tough for me to decide what to gift. My current list of favorites is:

*ginger yogi tea with stevia extract
*L’occitane en provence honey gentle water (alas….over budget as it costs $30)
*parchment paper for baking —- talk about fast cleanup!!
*fingerless gloves
*postal scale — ship from home — no need to go to the post office!! (maybe also over budget?)
*l’oreal voluminous mascara (and I’m not a big makeup girl….but I wear this)
*King Arthur Baking Cookbook — my favorite cookbook for the past 2 yrs running
*little plastic storage bins from the container store…..handy for all my little crafty bits
*Will Shortz puzzlemaster book — hours of amusement

The problem, as always, is to decide which of the above to bestow on my sistahs. Last year they got rechargeble flashlights from me…..very apropos as 2006 was a year of blackouts here in the midwest. I guess it will come down to whatever item I can find 7 others of instock before Christmas.

Hair pretties

I bought Mojo some really pretty hair clips in Chicago. Alas they were really pricey and hair pretties get lost like crazy around here. So……our solution…..make our own! Some hair pins, ribbon, hot glue & whatever decoration fits a 7yo girls fancy. Our latest hair pretties with more to come:

Quilt Squares

DNA and Mojo had to make a “quilt” square of themselves for a project at church. The squares will be tied to other squares from all the children at our church. So……on Sunday, we got to work. They drew pictures of themselves on paper, selected fabrics, and then with lots of momma help, we put these together. The fabric is attached with heat & bond — only the hair is sewn on.
