The New Knitter Starter Garter Hat

Along with a friend, I’m teaching a group of 3rd through 5th graders to knit over the next four weeks. During the first lesson, they will make their knitting needles out of wooden dowels & beads and we’ll teach them the basic knit stitch. We needed to come up with a simple hat pattern that uses only a knit stitch. This is the hat I came up with:

It’s very basic and very simple and designed to fit a child size head from 20″ – 22″. For anyone just starting to knit, here’s the pattern:

Bulky weight yarn
Size 10 needles
Gauge: 3 st/inch

Cast on 60 stitches
Knit every row until your piece is 7″ long
K3, K2tog across the whole row
Knit next row
K2, K2tog across the whole row
Knit next row
K1, K2tog across the whole row
Knit next row
K2tog across the whole row
Knit next row
K2tog across the whole row
Cut yarn leaving a 12-15″ tail. Thread tail onto a blunt needles and pull through remaining stitches. Sew up back seam.
Voila! A very simple hat.

As you can see, this hat leaves plenty of room for embellishing. As Oli claimed this one, it is sporting a bug patch.
