A Measure of Freedom

I remember biking all around the neighborhood when I was a child. We’d bike to visit friends, bike to explore the far reaches of our street and bike to the little store to buy candy. All by ourselves — without supervision. My kids bike in our driveway. Sometimes they bike around the neighborhood. But any farther exploration has always had a parent escort. Not today. Today they were granted the chance to spread their wings a bit and explore. I let them bike to the school yard that is a mile from home.

I met them up there with Oli and hung out a bit. Then I told them to go farther, to bike another mile up the street to the little market to buy candy. They did. (I met them there, too,). Then they biked home. They are exuberant.
